Windows Update fails after installing Office Pro 2007 it says "service is not running"
I installed Windows 7 RC a few days ago. Windows update was working fine. After installing Office Pro 2007, it no longer works. When I try to check for updates, it pops up a dialog saying: Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer. It still doesn't work after a reboot. One other possible cause is that I activated Windows 7 recently. I believe this is the first time I have tried to update since I activated it.

In the Search programs and files box, type in MSCONFIG and press the Enter key. After theSystems Configuration window opens, click on the Services tab. Then click on Enable all and click Apply, then restart your computer.Carey Frisch

All of the services are checked. Some are running and some are not. Reboot has no effect. I tried to check for updates, and after it failed I looked in the logs and found this, which seemed to happen during the time I was trying to check for updates: The server {9B1F122C-2982-4E91-AA8B-E071D54F2A4D} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. So maybe if I can figure out what that applies to, then maybe I can fix it.

I think I have found the update service, I can stop and start it. Here is how I do these: net stop wuauserv net start wuauserv It stops and starts fine. With it stopped I re-registered some dlls as follows: regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll regsvr32 /s jscript.dll regsvr32 /s atl.dll regsvr32 /s softpub.dll regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll regsvr32 ./wuapi.dll regsvr32 ./wudriver.dll regsvr32 ./wups.dll regsvr32 ./wuwebv.dll net start wuauserv [ there may be duplicates to what I registered, because I found info on what to do from 2 different places ] Update _still_ fails! Please note I am running Windows 7 ultimate for x64 Thanks

I found a fix on this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/2ac37bde-e6e9-41ee-8dd4-ae68013fbe93/?prof=required Basically this is what it said to do: 1) Start an elevated to Administrator cmd.exe window 2) Stop the update service:net stop WuAuServ 3) Rename the directory %windir%/SoftwareDistribution to something else, such as SDOld (I had to reboot to do this, something was using the directory and after stopping all user programs, it was still in use, but after a reboot, the first thing I did was rename it and it worked. 4) Again elevated as Administrator in a cmd.exe windows, start the update service: net stop WuAuServ (for me it was already running because it autostarted when I rebooted). 5) Run Windows Update and it now works.

This just worked for me as I just had this issue under Windows 7 RTM. I hope this issue gets fixed as it took a little while to find this thread. Most users would probably just stop getting updates, which is not good. Thanks for the post!

HiI have had this problem myself. Microsft have told me that there are no w7 based updates foe Office 2007 but when they come on line Microft Update will then work.I find this strange. It would be good to know if anyone can use Microft Updates with W7 for Office 2007.Ray
